Middle School Raised $1,800 for Tunnel to Towers Foundation
“This year, Sayville Middle School ran a fundraiser to help our students and community remember the events of September 11th,” Assistant Principal Brian Decker said, referring to the Middle School's twentieth-anniversary commemorative activity launched at the beginning of this academic year.
“We prepared note cards for students to write a thought or message, acknowledging the events of September 11th or a sentence thanking all those who helped during and after the events of September 11th. Students, staff, and families who participated made a donation for every card that was completed. All the proceeds from the fundraiser were to be donated to the Steven Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.”
The Middle School community’s response was significant, and each note card collected was added to the display on the Middle School Cafeteria windows. “Our students, parents, and staff were extremely generous,” Mr. Decker noted, “and we were able to raise $1,800.00 for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.”
On November 1, 2021, a representative from the Steven Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation—Steven Casquarelli, retired from the FDNY—visited Sayville Middle School to accept the donation on behalf of the foundation. He was impressed by the Memorial Note Cards Display and expressed his gratitude for the contribution collected by Sayville Middle School.
Assistant Principal Brian Decker summed up the overall sentiments by saying, “We are extremely proud of our students and our families and staff who contributed to this noble cause and we will never forget those who perished on September 11, 2001.”
