Sayville High School Program Fosters Future Architects
Sayville High School Architectural Drawing courses: What Students Have Learned and Future Plans.
Story provided by Mr. Cross, Sayville High School, Technology teacher
Sophia Sanchez (senior), Jason Persan (senior), and Riley Lapine (junior) have one goal in common. To study architecture accredited by The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), and become a professional licensed architect.
Sophia has recently committed to Northeastern University where she will pursue a 5-year program in the STEM Certified Master of Architecture degree that is accredited by the National Architectural Accreditation Board. Jason was accepted to, and is considering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Syracuse University. He plans to pursue a Bachelor of Architecture degree. Riley is a junior, and has recently returned from a trip from Miami, Florida where she shadowed an architecture class for the day at the University of Miami. She also would like to pursue a Bachelor of Architecture degree. A Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.) is a bachelor's degree designed to satisfy the academic requirement of practicing architecture around the world.
All three students started their STEM education by successfully completing coursework within the Technology Department at Sayville High School. Design and Drawing for Production is a full-year technical drawing course also known as DDP. Design and Drawing for Production teaches students to problem solve, the design process, and challenge one's visual-spatial intelligence while producing technical drawings. Architectural Drawing I and Architectural Drawing II are half-year courses that give students the opportunity to learn and use Chief Architect® by creating a set of drawings and 3D renderings. Chief Architect® is one of the leading professional home design software programs used in industry. The software is used to design home plans, interior design plans, and remodeling plans. Furthermore, all Architectural Drawing II students will design and build a scaled model home before the completion of the course.
