21 Years Remembering 9 -11

On the twenty-first anniversary of 9-11, as our Nation recalled the unforgettable events, local communities held their unique memorials to honor those who were lost.

In Sayville School District, to commemorate 9-11 and Patriot Day, each of the school buildings created their own special remembrance ceremonies. However, in all the buildings, the principals recalled the historic event before conducting a school-wide Moment of Silence. In addition, students and teachers held classroom discussions focused on the heroics of those who died as well as those who are always prepared to protect our freedom.

At the Middle School, Principal Dr. Joseph Castoro's announcement summed up the sentiments: 

Morning announcement: Friday, September 9, 2022

"This Sunday is September 11, the 21st anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our country in NY, Washington DC. and in the Sky above Pennsylvania. Students, this is a date which should not simply pass by each year. This terrible attack took thousands of innocent lives on that day and in the years that followed. 

The evils of that day were met by our first responders, firefighters, police officers, ambulance crews that rushed into danger to help and save others. September 11th is designated as Patriot Day, reminding us to pause,remember and be thankful. These heroes are around us all the time in our community, our homes, and even here in our school. For those of you that do not know, our security staff were all law enforcement officers earlier in their professional lives. I would like to say a special thank you to: 

Wayne Simone - 25 years NYPD - Retired as a Captain

Brian Alimena - 25 years NCPD - Retired as a Detective

Alfred Eaton - 20 years NYPD - Retired as a Detective

Joseph Bizzaro - 20 years NYPD - Retired as a Police Officer

Donna Patsos - 20 years NYPD - Retired as a Police Officer

Corina Anzelino- NYPD Sergeant 

Carol Gallo - 21 years Suffolk County Sheriff's Office - Retired as a Deputy Sheriff

Students and staff, when you see these heroes, I ask that you please thank them for all they have and continue to do to keep us safe each and every day. 

I ask right now for everyone to please stand and join me in the pledge of allegiance and remain standing for a moment of silence as we remember those lost on September 11, 2001.

At Cherry Avenue Elementary School, Dr. Lisa Ihne led the morning announcements with a statement about 9/11 and held a moment of silence.  All staff and faculty wore red, white and blue in recognition of 9/11.

On Monday afternoon of September 12 at Sayville Administration building, personnel participated in a remembrance. Superintendent Dr. Marc Ferris officiated, speaking about the heroes and all we  lost and asking for a Moment of Silence. All-State musician and Sayville Senior Lauren Manisian played taps on the trumpet to close the ceremony.
