Congratulations to the future Sayville High School Class of 2027, who on Wednesday, June 21, had their moving up ceremony at the middle school!

This year’s future high schoolers began their middle school careers during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and Principal Dr. Joseph Castoro praised the students for their resiliency.

Dr. Castoro also imparted nine pieces of advice to the students to take with them into their high school career and beyond.

  1. Never shake someone’s hand sitting down. If you can stand up to greet them, get up. Look them in the eyes. Be confident in who you are and what you have to offer and what you bring to the table.

  2. As we enter summer never enter the pool by stairs. Do a cannonball. Make a splash. Make an impression. In all you do, let the world know that you are there.

  3. When you’re entrusted with a secret, keep it. Trust, honesty, integrity matter. Let those be the words that people think of when they see your name.

  4. If someone ever offers you a breath mint. Take it. There could be a reason they’ve offered you the breath mint.

  5. Don’t ever let a wishbone grow where your backbone should be. Stand up for things that matter. Don’t wish for a light load. Wish for a strong back to carry the heavy things that life can hand you.

  6. Eat lunch with the new kid.

  7. After you write an angry email or text, reread it carefully then delete it. Don’t be a keyboard warrior. Remember, once you click send for the email, the text, the photo, you can’t put that genie back in the bottle.

  8. Remember that, please, and thank you don’t cost a cent, but they sure will buy you a lot in the long run.

  9. Always stay humble and kind.
