Sayville Junior Animals Robotics Team to Compete in Long Island Championships

On Sunday, March 5, the FIRST® LEGO® League Robotics Team at Sayville Middle School will compete in the Long Island FLL Championships. As the theme of this year's season is SUPERPOWERED teams have been exploring where energy comes from and how it is distributed, stored, and used, and then put their creativity to work to innovate for a better energy future. 

Part of the competition is to create an innovation project. The innovation project's goal is to research a problem relevant to the competition's theme, and then create a solution for said problem. Students on Sayville’s team decided to study ghost power. Ghost power is the power that is wasted by a device when it is not actively being used. An example of devices that use ghost power are game consoles, alarm clocks and coffee machines. Sayville’s team researched ghost power and surveyed the community on devices plugged into the average household. 

FIRST® LEGO® League guides students through S.T.E.M. learning and exploration at an early age and helps them apply their skills in an exciting competition while building habits of learning, confidence, and teamwork along the way. 

Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together.
Sayville’s team is a FIRST® LEGO®  League Challenge Team, which means that they must design, build, program, and operate LEGO® robots to complete missions on a map board.

There are 16 students on the Sayville Junior Animals Robotics Team with teachers Tracy Toth and Jim McLoughlin serving as coaches.
