“Sayville Serving Sayville” Returns

March 7, 2023

The high school gymnasium was buzzing on Tuesday, March 7, when teachers and staff from each elementary school competed against each other in the fourth annual “Sayville Serving Sayville” charity volleyball tournament.

Organized by Sunrise Drive Physical Education teacher Amy Chaimowitz, the tournament raised money for the Sayville School Employees Charitable Fund and collected food donations for the Sayville Food Pantry on Gillette Avenue.

Students and parents filled the gym, some with homemade signs, cheering on the teachers and staff from their school. All three mascots from the elementary schools were on hand for photo opportunities and interacted with the crowd.

Before the games began, Sunrise Drive fifth grader Anthony Babbino united the crowd with his rendition of the National Anthem. Between games, kids had the opportunity to take to the floor and dance to classics such as the “Cotton Eye Joe” and “Cha Cha Slide.”

Four games were played in total, with the Lincoln Avenue team proving victorious among the teachers. For the fourth and final game, third, fourth, and fifth graders chosen from a lottery had the opportunity to play the champion Lincoln Avenue teachers. The kids showed teamwork and skill to beat the Lincoln Avenue staff team!

Chaimowitz said that approximately $1,600 was raised and twenty boxes of food were collected.
