Congratulations to Ava Chiarulli, Sophia Lanzilotta and Hailey Lucia, fourth graders from Ms. Moran’s class at Cherry Avenue who recently won the PSEG Long Island “I Am EM-Powered Contest.”

The contest encourages young people to think of the future of energy efficiency differently and to create a video public service announcement to educate the public. The trio from Ms. Moran’s class chose the topic of phantom energy. Phantom energy is the energy that is wasted by a device when it is plugged in but not actively being used.

The three students' video was one of eleven chosen to take the top prize. Each student received a $75 Visa gift card and the class received a gift card to throw a celebration.

“This year, I had three teams in the semi-finals and that is quite an accomplishment for my fourth graders as the competition was grades 4 through 8,” Ms. Moran said. “Their creativity was evident in each video, but I am particularly proud of my winning team. These three students researched their topic, wrote their script and honed their tech skills by recording their PSA. Big problems are sometimes solved with small solutions and these young ladies proved that.”
